Windows Explorer uses the same layout for every windows. It displays two panes: the left pane comes with links and shortcuts to special functions or location such as desktop, libraries, network folders; while the right pane displays the content of the current location.
By default, when you open a folder on the right, the content on the left doesn’t change upon the folder you’ve just open. It’s all right to most users, but sometimes you might find it handier is the content on the left is automatically synchronous.
It’s interesting that you can adjust the Windows Explorer settings to do this without installing any utility. To do this, follow tips on this post Automatically Synchronize The Folder Structure In Windows Explorer [Windows 7]
