Since Windows Vista, the Windows Error Reporting service automatically saves the application crash information into .WER files. So if you are using Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008, you can access those .WER files to read crash information.
Aside reading the information in .WER format, you might export it to friendlier formats such as text, CSV, HTML, XML. However, those formats are not friendly enough indeed, and applications perhaps love them only I think :).
In order to find another way to read the information, AppCrashView may be your good friend. No need to install and completely free, this tiny utility offers you two major features: view application crash information on your system stored in .WER files; and export the information to various formats listed above.
